Property Maintenance Tiling Your Floor

The appeal of tiled floors is becoming more and more appealing to property owners due to the way they dramatically change the look and feel of a room. Floor tiles have also grown in popularity due to the fact they will outlast most other floor coverings such as carpet. Floor tiles can be laid on most floors with the correct preparation. The floor surface should be washed, dried and hovered to name just a few; you need to ensure that the floor surface is smooth, level and dry. You can place floor tiles in any room of your house that please, however they are most suited for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. One thing that should be noted when it comes to gaining your floor tiles is that when you are calculating the amount of tiles that you need you should allow an extra 10% for waste. When it comes to the actual act of laying the floor tiles it is the same whether the tiles are, for example vinyl or quarry tiles, it is done in three basic steps, which involves setting out the room, applying adhesive and laying the tiles; you should cut around anything that gets in your way. Although laying the tiles is the same practice for many different tiles; the preparation for laying them is different and depends on the type of tiles that you are using.

Good building practice means that you shouldn't lay tiles on top of each other. Although this may be the quickest method you are relying on the floor below to be stuck down perfectly, if it is not it could cause problems. Also, with all floor tiles, it is better if you can remove the skirting boards and then lay the tiles before re-attaching the skirting boards. There are two main reasons as to why this is a good idea, the first being it will hide any edges that aren't cut perfectly and the second being it will mean the height of your new floor will not hide any of the skirting board. If you don't wish to lay tiles on top of each other you will need to remove your current flooring. This can often be a highly time consuming task and not one of the nicest jobs that you will ever undertake. You should wear protective clothing such as gloves and goggles. There are two main steps that need to be considered and taken when it comes to laying floor tiles. The first of these is setting out the tiles. This is because one of the main secrets to success with floor tiles is to spend time working out the tile positions; this is often called 'setting out.' You should mark out the mid points along the longest wall and make a chalk line at right angles to this mark. This should be repeated for the adjacent shorter wall so that you have a pair of lines that cross.
